All Routes Converge to Uzbekistan: Open Call for Centre for Contemporary Art Tashkent Artist Residencies

        All routes converge in Uzbekistan. Located in the center of the Eurasian continent, the country has played a pivotal role in the history of the Silk Road – an extensive network of trade routes that connected East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe from around the 2nd century BCE to the 14th century CE.

In the 20th century, Uzbekistan served as a vital republic within the Soviet Union, undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization. Today, the country stands as a strategic crossroads, balancing its deep historical roots with the legacies of its Soviet past and an ambitious vision for the future.

Uzbekistan’s rich history is palpable in its capital city, Tashkent. On its capacious boulevards, mammoth Soviet brutalist buildings and intricate mosques come together to create a palimpsest of cultural influences, interweaved in the hybrid West Asia.

It is in this dynamic melange of cultural contexts that the upcoming Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), an Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) initiative, launches its Artist Residencies program.

Currently accepting applications until January 5, 2025, for the inaugural cycle – consisting of two intakes in February and May 2025 – the 8-week-long program will serve as a platform for engagement with the rich history and culture of Uzbekistan. Each cohort will consist of five emerging and established artists, designers, curators, and researchers from across the world and Uzbekistan.

Applications will be reviewed by an international Selection Committee including ceramic artist Alisher Rakhimov (Uzbekistan); Ahmad S Angawi (Saudi Arabia), associate director of Al Makmad Foundation and founder of Zawiya 97; Carla Sodi (Mexico), director at Fundación Casa Wabi; curator, writer and art historian Glenn Adamson (USA); Ikko Yokoyama (Japan), lead curator at design and architecture M+ museum; design patron Pascale Siegrist Mussard (France) and professor of architecture, artist and designer Ronald Rael (USA).

In addition to overseeing the selection process, the Committee members will also serve as mentors to resident artists throughout the duration of the program.

“By fostering cross-cultural collaborations, [the Artist Residencies] are creating a vibrant and sustainable ecosystem that will benefit our community and create a meaningful artistic dialogue,” says Gayane Umerova, chairperson of the ACDF. “We look forward to seeing the works that will emerge from this inaugural residency, showcasing our country’s heritage and contemporary creativity on the global stage.”

Located in the historic Tashkent mahallas – Uzbek for “neighbourhoods”– of Namuna and Khast Imom, the residencies are situated in newly restored heritage sites conceptualised by world-renowned French architecture firm Studio KO.

As a former madrasah, the Namuna mahalla site will continue its educational capacity by accommodating up to four residents working in contemporary art, design, crafts, architecture, culinary arts, moving pictures, or sound art. The historic buildings, including a mosque, have been restored by the ACDF and Aga Khan Trust for Culture, alongside local builders, carpenters, and masons with a focus on mentorship and passing skills to a younger generation of craftsmen.

The historic mosque in Namuna will become an exhibition space, complemented by a new building designed by Studio KO that will house a café and workshops. The living quarters for residents feature 300-year-old bricks, some original and others sustainably sourced from Bukhara for the project. Elsewhere, the ayvan – a terrace – once a community gathering spot, has also been restored as part of the revitalisation efforts and will host a tea house and a traditional tandyr stove for baking bread and samsa pies. The local mahalla community offers daily prayers and blessings for the space.

In the tranquil Khast Imom mahalla, which formerly served as a kindergarten, the residences will be dedicated to researchers, curators, and writers. House Central Asia’s first curatorial library. It will offer residents a selection of publications on art, culture, art history, textiles, and crafts from Uzbekistan and around the world.

About Gayane Umerova
Gayane Umerova is dedicated to developing the culture sector in Uzbekistan. As chairperson of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) and Deputy Head of the Department of Social Development of the Presidential Administration, Gayane Umerova is at the helm of building Uzbekistan’s cultural infrastructure. Her efforts are bringing the nation’s art, artists, and cultural heritage into the global spotlight. Currently, she is overseeing the restoration and development of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Tashkent, poised to become a new cultural hub for the region, and is the commissioner of the 2025 Bukhara Biennial (5 September - 20 November).
