Michèle Lamy’s Curatorial Debut in Dubai Explores Light and Darkness at ICD Brookfield Place

By Global Art Daily Editorial Board
Published on March 13, 2024

Two more days to catch one of Dubai’s art season most talked-about exhibitions: Chiaroscuro marks Michèle Lamy’s curatorial debut in DIFC, presented in collaboration with Carpenters Workshop Gallery at ICD Brookfield Place.

Bringing together internationally renowned artists and designers, including Rick Owens, Nacho Carbonell and Studio Drift with leading regional voices such as Latifa Saeed and Omar Al Gurg, the exhibition explores the dichotomy of light and darkness.

Lamy divides the show into these two states, beginning with “The Darkness” and inviting viewers into a mysterious space where beguiling forms take shape in the depths. This section is rooted primarily in work from Rick Owens, the tigré pattern of his Gallic Chair evokes alternating shadows that ground the artist’s practice in the rich materials of stone and wood.

Transitioning to "The Light," the exhibition celebrates the transformative power of illumination. Visitors will marvel at Studio Drift's Fragile Futures installation and Nacho Carbonell's Combi Cocoon 2, which use light as a central element in their compositions.

I am fighting for a new way of being through these dark and challenging times we are living through and have used their works to interpret my vision between light and dark, to envision better times.”

- Michèle Lamy

ICD Brookfield Place Arts is a gateway for discovery and support for local and regional talent, offering visibility to emerging artists and more established creative practitioners through an array of year-round programming.

ICD Brookfield Place is the region’s premier lifestyle and business destination with over 990,000 sq ft of sustainable and future-ready workspace alongside 160,000 sq ft of highly curated dining, retail, and community space.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery is founded on the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loic Le Gaillard, who first opened the gallery in a former carpenter’s workshop in London’s Mayfair. Since then, Carpenters Workshop Gallery has proven its deserved place as a leading pioneer in the world of high art and design, expanding to operate four galleries worldwide, situated in key locations of London, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.

Michèle Lamy eludes simple categorisation. She is an entrepreneur and producer, collaborator and performer, wife and business partner to Rick Owens with whom she has built an empire, Owenscorp. Lamy occupies a unique place within culture, enjoying iconic status in both the fashion and art worlds. On a daily basis, Lamy functions as the producer of the RO furniture collection, working closely with the artisans in the construction process as well as directing the positioning and presentation of the works, including shows at The Musée D’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris and MOCA LA. In 2014 Lamy created ‘LAMYLAND’, an umbrella term for her independent creative projects and endeavours, bringing together all the key elements integral to her practice – experimentation, collaboration, storytelling and creation. In 2017, Lamy formed the conceptual band, LAVASCAR, with the artist Nico Vascellari and her daughter Scarlett Rouge. They have released two albums, with lyrics derived from the poetry of Langston Hughes and Etal Adnan respectively, and have been invited to perform at both the Pompidou in Paris and the Triennale in Milan.
